Yesterday my marching band went to our first competition. It was a double competition, and what I mean by that is that all the band performed at prelims and the were placed in a ranking for top eight to decide who made it to finals. It was a stand still performance (because the field was muddy and gross from all the rain we had recently). For the people who aren't to marching band knowledgeably inclined a stand still performance means that we do our show without marching it. It means that the awards that you can usually get can get decreased. For example, you can possibly win color guard, drum line, marching, music, general effect, and visual performance and also grand champion/class rankings. At the stand still all we could was general effect (which was just guard, so basically a guard award or so our guard instructor says), music, and our class awards. We won all of those. Also we made fifth of sixteen bands going into finals.
Then for finals we got to marching our amazing show. After me and my amazing drum major and drum captain went up and waited for our final ranking. Each one I wished it wasn't us. That we would be ranked amazingly. They got to sixth place. They called our rival band's name. Then fifth place was called. It wasn't us. Finally we got to fourth place. They call our name. It was amazing knowing that we won. Beating bigger bands than us. Our band is only a little over forty people. We beat people with about (or over) one hundred. It was a very successful competition. But as our band director says, "We will pull on our positivity pants and keep improving!"
