Color guard is not just with the marching band. There is also an activity called winter guard. Winter guard is the same thing as color guard except for a few key differences. For example, winter guard is done in a gym, in the winter. Winter guards do a routine to a prerecorded song. It can include different pieces of equipment or the same. Winter guard is judged the same way a color guard. They are still looking for smiles, good work, the way you move around on a field/gym floor.
Winter guards are just a group of color guard girls (or guys, it would be awesome to have a guy in my guard) that want to keep up their skill in the winter. Just like marching band, in winter guard you can compete. It is very similar to marching band competitions. You perform and then change. Then you go up into the stands and wait until awards are given out. Just like there is in band the are different sizes of color guards/winter guards. For winter guard it depends on the size of the guard (not the school it supports; one way it is very different from the band). Most schools have these and you might not even know it. Just as a color guard instructor or section leader. Most guards will take anyone (like my school! I will take just about anyone!?) but with some big schools, they have auditions. They will teach you some basic moves and tricks and then they evaluate who remembered or understood it best and then you can join (for color guard and winter guard.)
